Mother Nature Wins Again

The Millers Mills Ice Harvest has fallen victim to the above average temperatures and heavy rains that our area has experienced in recent days. Dave Huxtable, chairman of the ice harvest, was forced to cancel this year’s event due to safety concerns. “Although there is ice on the pond, the shoreline is open and presents a serious danger to the workers.” he said. “This is the second time in three years that the Ice Harvest has been cancelled.” In 1974, Charles Kuralt attended the ice harvest and gave the event national recognition on his TV show, “On the Road with Charles Kuralt”.

The ice harvest was scheduled for Sunday, February 10. The Millers Mills Grange, which sponsors the event, is one of the few remaining Granges in Herkimer County. The annual ice harvest has drawn the community together for many generations and, with the thought of sharing the tradition, was opened to the public in 1972.

The lack of ice will have no effect on the Millers Mills Grange’s Homemade Ice Cream Social, scheduled for July 20, 2008. For further information on this event, please visit our Ice Cream Social page.
